Art is most alive when it confronts the issues of the day. The lushly illustrative, sensual and romantic art of English Victorian artists borrowed themes from classical literature, ancient mythology and morality tales to explore social concerns like infant mortality, divorce, burial and cremation. It is an approach foreign to us but nevertheless fascinating. These Victorian works are set apart as well because of their technical brilliance and the artists' inventive use of colour.
