Born in Launceston, Tasmania, in 1911, Hector Gilliland has been exhibiting since the 1930s. He studied at the National Art School, Sydney beginnig as tonal painer of landscape and still life. The abstractions of his mature and lare-age period have not been surpassed in formal reduction or philosphical complexity.
