The purpose of Art speaks: Japanese is to provide teachers of Japanese language and culture with an educational resource for developing their students' language skills together with an understanding and appreciation of Japanese art. Sixteen significant artworks from the Art Gallery of New South Wales collection have been selected to represent key themes in Japanese art including religion (Shinto and Buddhism), nature ( the seasons, animals, landscape), society ( the 'floating world' of ukiyo-e, daily life, work and leisure) and history. The process of discovery and interpretation of art encourages students to reflect on their own culture and ultimately leads them to better understand themselves.
