Years in the planning, this work pays ample testament to the skill of Lewin, one of the great colonial artists and author of the first illustrated book ever published in Australia, the magnificent Birds of New South Wales of 1813 (which is discussed in some detail). Beautifully illustrated throughout, this attractive work is written with great verve and attention to detail by Richard Neville, who has been interested in colonial art for many years and was the curator of the influential 1997 exhibition A Rage for Curiosity.
