Queenie McKenzie was a remarkable indigenous woman from the remote East Kimberley in Western Australia. Growing up on a cattle station known as Texas Downs, Queenie played many roles in her extraordinary life, including cook, nurse, carer, artist and, most importantly perhaps, cultural leader.

Written in the Land: The Life of Queenie McKenzie explores her personal story and that of her beautiful country in her own words and through the use of stunning images, including her acclaimed artworks. In 1998, the government of Western Australia declared Queenie a 'State Living Treasure', in recognition of her dedication to art and to the cultural sustainability of her community.
