Raquel Ormella’s work marries an emphatic material presence – the ever-present concern with the object’s particular quality as ‘thing’ and its social, art-historical and political contexts – with dynamic elusiveness of meaning. She handles her materials as potent questioning devices, ensuring that while the work addresses environmental issues, discourses of conceptual performance and recent Australian political culture, it avoids any reductive characterisation as ‘activist’ or ‘political’. Life bears certain urgencies it seems to say, and these can only be effectively met with a mix of critical self-reflection, focused action and emotional and intellectual commitment.
This book documents Ormella’s recent Artspace project She went that way. It includes an extensive selection of images, writing from Curator Reuben Keehan, Ann Stephen and Lisa Havilah, and an interview between the artist and Lizzie Muller.
