Organised by the Watari-Um Museum of Contemporary Art, this monograph covers the visual works produced by actor, musician and painter John Lurie over the last twenty years. Brightly coloured, rough and childlike depictions of figures, vibrant textures, dreamlike and repetitive images and the use of words all characterise Lurie’s distinct manner of expression. Like his contemporary, and sometime collaborator, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lurie’s work manifests a complex, dissociative language that is at once disorienting and comforting in its mundanity – a visualisation of a postmodern language. The book is both a compact and admirable overview of his paintings.
