Alfio Cavallaro Eyes wide shut: society's underbelly
My body of work, Eyes wide shut: society's underbelly, explores the sad reality of our modern world through the landscape of New York. Grand cities are celebrated for their architecture and landmarks, while being filled with significant social issues that are overlooked and ignored as they ‘only’ affect minority groups. The monochromatic palette of my dry point etchings represents society's penchant for oversimplification and a wilful disregard for what is actually happening. Often, our deliberate choice is to ignore the grey areas in life as the average person is unaffected by issues such as those explored in my work.
