PRIVATE COLLECTION Arthur Streeton *Settler's camp** 1888

**Bush adventure**

This painting shows a man cooking over a fire at his campsite by the edge of some trees.

Notice how he has pitched his tent. Would you like to sleep there? What would you need to watch out for?

What objects has he carried with him on his journey through the bush?

Imagine you are going camping in the bush today. What would you take with you? Draw all the equipment you would need here.

At home, try growing some fruit or vegetables from seeds like this settler would have done. Use a journal to document your plant’s progress.

Poetic painting

Inspired by a poem, this painting expresses the joy and beauty of being surrounded by nature.

Follow the zigzagging river with your eyes as it flows through the landscape. What features catch your attention? Name the different types of animals you can see.

Describe the colours and how they enhance the mood of the painting.

Draw things from nature that you think are beautiful and bring you joy.

At home, paint or draw something from nature inspired by your favourite song, poem or story.

PRIVATE COLLECTION Arthur Streeton *Minarets, Cairo* 1897

**Minarets and markets**

Lofty palm trees and tall towers, or minarets, lead our eyes up to a dazzling blue sky in this busy market scene painted in Egypt in the 1890s.

Notice how the blue robes of the people in the market create a cluster of activity.

Streeton only gives us a thin glimpse of the city, so what do you think the rest of these buildings and the marketplace look like?

Extend this painting and draw what you think lies beyond frame.

At home, draw a picture of your favourite place to visit on holiday.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA COLLECTION Arthur Streeton *Circular Quay* 1893

**Harbour view**

This long thin painting, on a recycled wood panel, shows the hustle and bustle of Circular Quay in Sydney.

Count how many different types of boats you can see. Imagine you are a weather reporter. How would you describe the conditions on the harbour on this day?

Think about how Circular Quay looks today. What features or buildings are missing? Is it even busier nowadays?

Draw what this same harbour view might look like today.

At home, find something unusual or recycled that you can paint on and transform it into a piece of art.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF VICTORIA COLLECTION Arthur Streeton *Windsor* c1904

**Fit for a queen**

This painting shows Windsor Castle in England, home to the British royal family.

Spot the steam train and station in the middle ground. Where do you think the engine is? How can you tell?

Look at the reflective surface of the River Thames in the foreground. How much detail can you see mirrored in the water?

If you were a king or queen, where would you like to live? Draw your ideal regal home here.

At home, design and build a castle for one of your toys using cardboard, boxes and empty toilet rolls.

Battle-weary landscape

Streeton was a war artist during the First World War. This painting shows one of the battlefields he visited in France.

The scene is eerily quiet, but can you spot any evidence that shows a battle has taken place?

Find the following things:

Two men carrying a stretcher
A pair of legs
A tower
Swirls of smoke
Burnt-out trees
Piles of mud
Houses

Imagine you are news reporter working alongside Streeton. Describe what you can see and write your front-page headline and a few sentences about the battle.

At home, find out more about the artworks Streeton completed during the First World War.
