Celebrity talk: Thomas Mayor on the Uluru Statement from the Heart
Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let’s work together.
Art After Hours, Celebrity talk
Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2019, hear from Thomas Mayor, a Zenadth Kes man touring the country as the current custodian of the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
Thomas Mayor is a Torres Strait Islander who grew up on Larrakia land. In 2017, he was elected from the Darwin constitutional dialogue to go to the culmination of 13 regional constitutional dialogues – the Uluru National Constitutional Convention. Thomas was part of the constitutional moment at Uluru that conceived the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The Uluru Statement proposes that a referendum is held to constitutionally enshrine a First Nations Voice, and that a Makarrata Commission is established to supervise a process of agreement making, or treaty making, and truth telling about Australia’s history.
Thomas will share why the Uluru Statement was made and why its proposals are vital to the future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and the entire nation.
