Sidney Nolan | What’s in the box?

Did you know that Sidney Nolan used house paints? Or that he had a special travelling case for them, so he could make art wherever he went? Head behind the scenes to the Gallery’s conservation lab with the Gallery’s head of paintings conservation Paula Dredge, who unpacks these amazing artifacts of Nolan’s process and shares the stories behind them.

A three-year scientific postgraduate position within the Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Conservation Department, researching the use of enamel house paint by Sidney Nolan, was supported by the Conservation Benefactors in partnership with an Australian Research Council Linkage Project.
