Simryn Gill

Biography

Living in Sydney and Malaysia, Simryn Gill works with writing, drawing, photography, printmaking, books and publishing, among other methods, always returning to questions of how we occupy our exterior and interior landscapes, and how we carry places within us.

In recent years her works have been seen at Buxton Contemporary, Melbourne (2021); Gropius Bau, Berlin (2020); Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2020); and the Drawing Room, London (2019). In 2013, the artist showed at the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, and her work was included in documenta 12 and 13.

Gill’s work is held in numerous public collections, including at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia and National Gallery of Australia as well as the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Tate, London; the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Singapore National Gallery; and Singapore Art Museum.

In 2020 Gill was one of the artists commissioned by the Art Gallery of New South Wales to create work for the Sydney Modern Project, the transformation of the institution into a two-building art museum campus. Her work, Clearing, is a response to the removal of a tree from the Art Gallery campus.
