International art

From its home in Sydney, on Gadigal Country, the international collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales connects multiple global histories, art periods, styles, meanings and inspirations.

Founded on a significant collection of British Victorian art and an early gift of ceramics and bronzes from Japan, the international collection has since expanded to include fine examples from 15th-century European Renaissance art; ceramics from across the centuries; an outstanding photography collection; works by avant-garde modernists; exceptional works by late 20th-century American and European artists, and contemporary art from across the globe.

We are a leading centre for Asian art, with a collection that takes visitors on a journey through arts and cultures stretching from Indonesia to Mongolia, Japan to Iran. And we especially recognise our place within the Pacific region, through a rich and diverse collection of works by our neighbours across the Great Ocean.

As new channels of global communication increasingly transcend national boundaries, the international collection grows in response to an ever more fluid and interconnected world.
