The Jericho Valley and Jordan

Before World War I, Dugdale gained academic training at the Académie Julian and Atelier Colarossi in Paris. He was never commissioned as an official British war artist, but served in the Yeomanry, the mounted arm of the British Army Reserve Territorial Force. As a soldier he operated concurrently with Australian units in Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine.

'The Jericho Valley and Jordan' is one of a number of landscapes Dugdale painted in oil on board during his time in the Middle East. In viewpoint and subject matter it bears a striking resemblance to George Lambert's paintings of the Jericho Valley. In 1919 Dugdale held an exhibition of his Middle Eastern works at Leicester Galleries, London. He went on to become a renowned portraitist of military personnel during World War II.
