  • About

Marion Borgelt's paintings hover ambiguously between a symbolic register and pure abstraction. Borgelt's carefully worked surfaces, distilled palette and organic forms suggest interior spaces - both psychic and bodily - as well as cosmic voids. This work marked the culmination of the artist's 'Bloodlight' series, begun in 1995. The curves and slits of earlier compositions in this series allude more overtly to fleshy forms and to felt experience. Here, by contrast, the strong vertical lines and serial composition produce a pulsating optical effect that is less anthropomorphic. Nonetheless, the title draws the viewer back to the body.
