About
Carved representations of this huge-beaked swamp bird derive from graveside poles. The painted design, although held in this case to represent the bird’s feathers, is typical of the decorative panelling which is applied to some poles. The material is ironwood, favoured as the medium for poles because of its extreme hardness and resistance to deterioration in the tropical elements.
