About
During the late 1990s, as a development of his enduring interest in urban and industrial imagery, Senbergs turned to the theme of mapping various sites and cities. This stemmed from a fascination with maps and cartography, particularly older maps of the world, medieval town maps and Mexican Aztec maps of villages - and their combinations of seemingly precise rendering of streets, with exaggerated bird’s eye view perspective of monuments. He embarked on a mapping project of his own for the next decade, in a series of drawings and paintings, giving vivid expression to the essence of each chosen city site through application of similar principles, combined with memory and imagination. His subjects ranged from Melbourne and Sydney to Newcastle, Wollongong, Port Kembla, Ballarat and such European sites as Barcelona and Venice.
