About
Twenty-eight famous murders with verse is a gruesome series of prints, half of which were designed by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92) and the other half by his student Ochiai Yoshiiku (1833-1904) between 1866 and 1868. This print shows the evil courtesan Ohyaku standing beside a lantern and with a seated ghost at her feet. The seated figure, possibly murdered by Ohyaku, has suffered a great gash to the head. These types of images are known as chimidoro-e, blood-stained pictures, and sometimes had glue added to the ink to give the printed blood a texture of coagulation.
