    Old proofs are rare. MG Pellet acquired the plate before 1912 and printed 25 impressions from it. There were later restrikes from the steel-faced plate, which were acquired by the Galerie R G Michel in Paris, c 1948

  • About

    A painter, watercolourist, lithographer and etcher, Jean-Louis Forain studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme as well as the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. He became a follower of Degas and joined the Impressionist circle, exhibiting in the fourth Impressionist exhibition in 1879. Forain made his reputation with depictions of popular entertainments such as the café-concert and the ballet, as well as dancers and women at their toilette.
