About
'Twenty-eight famous murders with verse' is a series of gruesome prints based on kabuki and nō plays or events from Japanese history. The series is considered one of the first type of ero guro or erotic grotesque works in Japanese art. Produced earlier in Yoshitoshi’s career, he was thought to be a forerunner of the style which showed extremes of violence or sex in woodblock prints. The print 'Naosuke Gombei ripping off a face' is likely taken from a kabuki story of a servant who crept into his master’s room killing him, his wife and children.
