About
Marek was one of Australia's foremost surrealists, a painter, draughtsman, avant-garde film-maker and teacher. Czech-born he arrived in Australia with his wife Helena in 1948 and has lived and worked in New South Wales, South Australia, New Guinea and Tasmania. He was the subject of an AGNSW 'Project' exhibition 1975-76 and a critical inclusion in the National Gallery's exhibition 'Surrealism, Flight by Night' 1993 and its satellite touring component on Australian Surrealism.
Apart from his undoubted qualities as a painter, Marek was a gifted and sensitive draughtsman, his charcoal drawings are especially fine with references to the human figure and the organic nature of matter.
