Further information

Brian Robinson’s active childhood fostered in him a strong connection with Waiben ocean and Land. Robinson fondly recalls traipsing the island with sketchbook in hand, although he also cites the influence of television and comic books within his works. Whilst sketching from imagination, memory, and facsimiles of any household publications, he also draws upon the influence of the Roman Catholic Church – a denomination faithfully followed by his household. Hours idled in Mass impacted Robinson’s appreciation of renaissance aesthetics, stained-glass windows, and biblical narratives.
In Moving with the Rhythm of the Stars 2017 Robinson offers his interpretation of the night sky, alluding to celestial navigation that has shaped the course of history and the diverse reference points that inform his unique perspective. Robinson has been pivotal to the development of the distinct style of printmaking employed by many artists connected to the Torres Straits, in which fine details and figurative elements are combined, and simply but expertly printed in black on white.
