  • About

Throughout his career Bruegel provided original drawings to the famous Antwerp publisher Hieronymous Cock to serve as direct models for engravings. This print comes from the series on the Seven Virtues. The three theological virtues are Faith, Hope and Charity. The four cardinal virtues – Justice, Fortitude, Temperance and Prudence – were identified in Classical antiquity as the basic virtues upon which all others hinge. Bruegel depicts the Virtues as female figures with attributes. In ‘Faith’, a large congregation listens to a sermon while the sacraments are administered.
