About
Over the years Luke Sciberras has made several trips to Wilcannia in NSW to draw and paint the vast landscape and red soil terraces along the meandering, and currently struggling, Darling River. Sciberras spends time walking, sitting, painting, drawing, resting and studying every nuance of his surroundings leading to a keenly observed sense of place in the works he makes there.
Sciberras’ plein air drawings of the Wilcannia region have a luminous intensity of colour, light and form that evokes the distinctive landscapes of the area. As he draws and paints he often incorporates bits of river mud and grime into his materials, further connecting the work with the place in which they were made.
After a trip to Wilcannia in 2016, Sciberras reflected:
‘There has to be time spent in places and usually repeat visits over varying seasons to truly be able to wrest an image that is about a place rather than just of it’.
