About
A major figure in contemporary photography, Thomas Ruff art reflects on the tools, techniques, and subjects of his medium.
Ruff has been fascinated by astronomy from an early age, so much so that, upon leaving high school, he has said he had to decide between studying astronomy and art. This interest has been a source of inspiration for many series of works. In 1989 Ruff created his first astronomical series, 'Stars' 1989–92, in which he worked with archival images taken by telescopes located at the European Southern Observatory in the Chilean Andes.
For the 'Cassini' series 2008–11, Ruff used images taken by NASA's Cassini-Huygens Spacecraft of Saturn, its rings and moons. These elegant works were created by digitally manipulating the images on his computer, cropping, and resizing then saturating the original grey tone images with colour. He has said "The intention behind the colouring was to enhance the abstract quality of the scientific 'images of nature'." 1
