  • About

The poem was composed and painted by Duan Xu (also known as Duan Xuxue), younger brother of Duan Fang, for his daughter Tao Zhongchen, mother of Nancy Lee [donor of this work]. It was a tradition in imperial China that when a man became a ranking official at the court, his brothers would serve as his aides and staff. Duan Xu and his younger brother Duan Jing served in this capacity.

A seal on the lower left reads, 'Zhonggang', which is the 'zi' or alias of Duan Xu.
