  • About

This intriguing terracotta head of a woman is quite eroded, however, it is still possible to discern the elegant, oval face adorned with heavy earrings and an elaborate headdress. An example of a similar terracotta is included in P. Pal 'Icons of Piety, Images of Whimsy' (1987). He writes "Javanese ...[terracottas] are often remarkable as much for their original designs as for their humorous shapes. Javanese artists were equally deft in modelling figures of delicate, petite and graceful women and in depicting highly amusing characters undoubtedly meant to be caricatures."

    Asian Art Department, AGNSW, 1999.
