The first study for this drawing is in the AGNSW's Gleeson 'Sketchbook 1', from before 1987.

'I've always been interested, but especially in the last few years, in the mutability of shapes, and changing almost as you look at them ... This is how I think of life, as mutable, everything changed from instant to instant and forms do mutate and change', James Gleeson 27 August 2002.
