About
Liu Xun was born in Fuzhou, Fujian province in 1923. Liu is a self-taught artist. Unlike many of his peers, he never attended any professional arts school and was not tutored by well-known painters.
Liu Xun began his artistic career in 1940 in Yanan,The Cradle of Chinese Revolution, where the Red Army ended the Long March. There Liu produced many woodprints alongside other famous artists such as Yan Han and Li Qun.
Produced in 1950, The Shearing goats is a depiction of people living in the north and west of China. It is the last woodcut executed by Liu before he focused on oil painting. His transition from printmaker to oil painter was inspired by his growing desire to experiment with colour. -
