About
'The mother creek - pink' depicts various images of Shanghai, which the artist made after a boat trip down the Suzhou Creek on a very hot day. 'The bridge depicted (here)....is the Waibaidu Bridge where Jews were also to come across to safety without passports just pre World War II - the Suzhou or Mother Creek became the de facto border between the Japanese occupation in Shanghai and the International Settlement at this time. Ian Fairweather lived and painted on this creek' (Notes from the artist, August 2014, AGNSW files).
