About
William B Beattie (born 1871) was a musician, actor and writer. Ater he and Lambert met, they formed a life-long friendship. Lambert illustrated Beattie's story 'The love story of Tamar Niell'. In a tribute to his friend, Beattie wrote in the Lambert memorial issue of 'Art in Australia' in 1930:
'Clean, wholesome, strong and good to look at; truly the young Siegfried; and, above all, happy. That was the keynote to the real Lambert - happiness; he was glad he was alive.'
The foreword to Julian Ashton's reminiscences 'Now came still evening on', is also by Beattie. Beatrice and Ada Beattie, the subjects of two other drawings in the Gallery's collection, were his sisters.
