Depicted is the father of William, Beatrice and Ada Beattie. Beatrice and Ada are the subjects of two other drawings in the AGNSW collection.
William B Beattie (born 1871) was a musician, actor and writer. After he and Lambert met, they formed a life-long friendship. Lambert illustrated Beattie's story 'The love story of Tamar Niell'. In a tribute to his friend, Beattie wrote in the Lambert memorial issue of 'Art in Australia' in 1930:
'Clean, wholesome, strong and good to look at; truly the young Siegfried; and, above all, happy. That was the keynote to the real Lambert - happiness; he was glad he was alive.'
