Pont Neuf

Paris has long held a special interest in Lewis Morley’s life. In the early fifties Morley lived in the city as a young art student/painter for several years. A repeat visitor to the city throughout the seventies, eighties and nineties, Morley’s body of work comprises countless images of Paris. These have included those taken at the Musée Rodin, Luxembourg Gardens as well as numerous scenes of life as it unfolds such as on the Rue de Rivoli or at the flea markets (as featured in the AGNSW’s 2006 exhibition ‘Lewis Morley’). In this image of the Pont Neuf, Morley records Paris’s oldest standing bridge as it beautifully straddles the river Seine which flows beneath it. Whilst the Pont Neuf lacks the immediate iconographic punch of Paris’s other famous landmark, the Eiffel tower, the bridge is synonymous with the graceful beauty of the city that Morley cherishes.
