  • About

Shiavax Chavda was born in Navsari, Gujarat and in 1930 joined the Sir JJ school of Art, Mumbai. He continued his training at the Slade School, London and later at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris. Having worked as a sets designer the Diaghelev Ballet while he studied in Paris, Chavda grew interested in capturing the rhythm and movement of dancers. Energetic depictions of traditional Indian dancers and musicians are a hallmark of Chavda's work. 'The Dancer' and 'Manipuri drummer' reveal his characteristic use of quick, deft brushstrokes to capture movement and to convey vigour. Colour, used sparingly, heightens the drama and dynamism of the figures.
