About
Chen Nong, (alias Ming Zhai, style name Geng Ye), a native of Ganquan (present day Yangzhou, Jiangsu province). In Dictionary of names of Chinese artists he is described as specialising in painting historical figures and followed the traditional method which is demonstrated in this painting. The delicate clean lines point to the famous painter Gu Kaizhi (346-407), even the colours are reminiscent of his work. According to the inscription, the painting was painted on the birthday of Sakyamuni, which is April 8, in the year of Yiwei.
Asian Art Department, AGNSW, April 2013.
