About
Joyce Allen was born in Brisbane, and first encountered linocuts while at school in the 1930s. In the early 1950s she met Thea Proctor, and through her friend, printmaker Isobel Irvine met Joy Ewart. She studied etching with Ewart and Elizabeth Rooney at the Workshop Art Centre, Willoughby, Sydney 1960-62. She exhibited with the Society of Artists and Australian Watercolour Institute in the late 1950s, and with the Sydney Printmakers group and in Australian Print Council exhibitions in the 1960s. In 1970 she moved to Bowral, NSW, where she continued to work, largely in isolation from other artists.
