About
This indigo-dyed textile decorated with an organic stylised design, depicts the chevron peaks of mountain ranges associated with the cosmic Mount Meru of Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Incorporated into this landscape scene are buildings, possibly shrines - places of magical power and divine revelation. The most distinctive motif decorating this textile, however is the symmetrical fanned design symbolic of the mythical eagle known as the Garuda (sometimes identified as the 'mirong'). In this context, the Garuda represents the celestial realm, the heavenly realm of the cosmic mountain. Such cosmic patterns are usually associated with royalty.
