  • About

Juan Davila was born in Chile and moved to Australia in 1974. He studied at the University of Chile Law School and Fine Arts School. He currently holds an Australia Council Fellowship in preparation for a major retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney in 2006.

Davila's paintings, collage works and prints are amongst the most transgressive art works created in Australia. His incorporation of pornographic imagery, political references and art historical citations create a volatile mix of confrontational images and text which most famously lead to the censorship of 'Stupid as a Painter' by the AGNSW, the 'arrest' of the painting by the vice squad and the subsequent intervention of the NSW premier Neville Wran to secure its 'freedom'.

In his combination of various sources and references, underlined often by explicit sexual content, Davila's practice continues to question the very economy and institutional ideology of art practice.
