'Significant others' is a return to painting following a ten-year hiatus for Judith Wright in which the artist has been preoccupied with a series of sculptural installations (‘Journey’, ‘Destination’ and ‘Ancestors’).
The new works comprise a series of large abstract paintings in acrylic and wax on Japanese paper. They could be read as monolithic landscapes; as part of the artist’s personal narrative, they retain traces of physical as well as symbolic form. The pigments are applied in layers, with an accretion of translucent wash building up the forms, lending them a dense and complex subtlety of colour and tone.
'Significant Others' comprises of three major groups, the largest being this work, a quintet which stretches a little over 10 metres in length.
