  • About

Paula Savage is a Torres Strait Islander artist from the Kubin community of Moa Island. With a practice that includes weaving, drawing, printmaking and carving, Savage has established herself as one of the most prolific and diverse artists working at the local arts centre, Moa Arts. Her works represent her cultural heritage, as well as inherited stories and knowledge.

This basket references the prevalence of midges, or sandflies, on the Torres Strait Islands. These insects are strongly attracted to dark colours, favouring blue in particular. This basket serves the practical purpose of drawing the insects away from people.
