Further information

Bonington moved to France as an adolescent where he enrolled in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros and formed a friendship with Delacroix. He contributed a small number of plates to the Normandy volume of the ‘Voyages pittoresques’. The print captures the bustle of a provincial marketplace with figures in contemporary dress going about their daily business. The street of medieval buildings leads our eye to the clock tower in the distance which straddles the street above an arch.
