About
William Seeto's practice attends to the perceptual qualities of materials, objects and spaces. 'Untitled (5.2899)' belongs to a series he executed in the mid 1990s using corrugated cardboard, which bridges between the languages of abstraction, post-minimalism and arte povera. These works are distinguished by their gridded, geometric configurations as well as a delicate treatment surface.
Through the simple gesture of tearing away areas of the smooth cardboard 'veneer' to reveal the ridges beneath, Seeto deftly invests his readily available, mass produced medium with a distinctive sensibility through subtle variations in texture, depth and visual rhythm. Despite this effort to render each section unique, the title of the work resists subjective reading and is derived from the multiplied height and width of the assembled work.
