  • About

Wolpa Wanambi is among the leading artists working through Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art centre in Yirrrkala. Her father was the renowned artist Dundiwuy Wanambi, from whom she learnt to paint. In the 1990s Wolpa assisted her father with his major works. She continues the tradition of her late father by painting with the same meticulous detail, often taking many months to complete each work.

Wolpa's works are distinguished by their fine detail, precise painting technique combination of figurative elements within fields of details miny'tji which are drawn from her Marrakula clan. In 'Untitled' 2007 finely rendered goannas are depicted along the length of the larrkitj (hollow log). These goannas are connected with the Djungguwan ceremony which celebrates the richness and fertility of the country and of people and in this specific work relates to Gurka'wuy (Trial Bay) where Wolpa grew up.
