About
'She (Blanche Milligan) got me to do it for 6 pounds and gave me plenty of trouble and I thought as she was a nurse I would not charge her a fair price (for I designed two other ideas). Then she told me after I had made another detailed plate for her friend, that she had paid an English engraver 100 pound for a plate of three cupids borrowed from Rubens. That I had been badly diddled-and it sickened me of making any more book plates. First the fact that you cannot penetrate the idea the applicant has and if your design will suit led to waste of time and they never paid for designs.' (Letter from Lionel Lindsay to Harry Chaplin, 9 July 1958, pasted into the front of the volume of Lionel Lindsay bookplates)
