About
Kristen Headlam studied painting at the Victorian College of the Arts 1980-81, and has exhibited in Australia since 1988. She lives and works in Melbourne and in 2000 was the winner of the Moran Prize for portraiture.
In 1996, Headlam embarked on a series of paintings inspired by William Blake's poem 'The Sick Rose', from 'Songs of experience' 1794. Fragments of the text appear within the image.
The Sick Rose
O Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.Australian Art Department, AGNSW, 2001
