About
Tomislav Nikolic is one of the most significant and exciting abstract painters working in Australia today. Nikolic, like some of the great abstract painters of the twentieth century, draws inspiration from spirituality in his work, including religion, esoteric philosophies and new age mysticism. He will select ideas from various belief systems and popular culture, which are cryptically referenced in the titles of his work, and use these as a starting point for making paintings. According to Nikolic, the three segments of this triptych represent, from largest to smallest, an angel (soul), a portal (mind), and a contradiction (body). In this sense Nikolic has rendered, through a personalised and symbolic vocabulary of colour and form, a profile of an individual and elements that constitute their spiritual being.
