  • About

This work is from a series of drawings by the artist on the subject of his domestic environment, both inside his home and in the nearby neighbourhood, places with which he feels an emotional connection.

'I wanted to record my kitchen from all angles as the kitchen surfaces have for some time been a rich source of still life ephemera for me. I often prefer to paint and draw the casual clutter of modern life as it falls than to set up a still life with a pre-conceived composition (John Bokor, email to AGNSW, 2011)'.

Bokor’s drawings have a particular intensity, composed as they are of layers of graphite and gesso wash, with drawings and re-drawing visible through numerous superimposed layers. This reflects his method of interrogating his subject, but also its changing nature, which as everyday domestic clutter, changes frequently.

'I would block out part or all of the previous drawing with gesso so that I could build on the construction adding and subtracting objects from my entire field of vision in the hope that what would be produced would amount to the whole scene in front of me, I usually stopped when something I wasn’t expecting happened. Most of these drawings have at least 5 layers of drawing (John Bokor, email to AGNSW, 2011)'.
