  • About

This film was recorded late at night at the AGNSW. It was made to be part of the 'Mike Parr: The Tilted Stage' exhibition curated by Anthony Bond at Hobart TMAG in 2008 and to be included as an element in the performance of 'Cartesian Corpse'.
Parr sat in front of the arch that connects court 9 and 10. Behind him was the Detaille in court 10 framed by the arch. The camera moved from the figure of the artist who wore his father's military uniform to long oblique shots of selected paintings in the gallery including Streeton and Roberts. The camera zoomed in on these at extreme angles without moving from its position before the artist.
The details Parr preselected often had significant resonance with the imagery of the performance while the oblique angle resonated with the tilted stage and indeed with the oblique nature of all Parr's work. The wedge shapes, the anamorphosis and this angled shooting all derive from the lop-sided nature of the artist’s body which over his life has increasingly grown to reflect the absence of his arm.
