About
Geoff Kleem studied at Alexander Mackie College, Sydney in the 1970s and completed an MFA 1996 at the College of Fine Arts, University of NSW, Sydney. He has exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, and completed a number of residencies in the USA and Japan. His work in recent years has been seen at MAK Vienna 2012-3, ICAN 2013, Wiliam Wright Artists' Projects 2014 and Artspace Sydney 2015.
As Kleem explained in 2014: 'My work engages with notions of photography, sculpture and installation as a means of critically exploring our relationship with visual culture. I am concerned with what lies between these areas and how they interrelate. The use of large scale... is critical. Scale creates a sense of physical awareness, it generates a measure influencing the way the body responds to an image. Scale creates a perceptual dynamic between reactive and cognitive space, it forges a link between the work and the viewer while engaging with the physicality of the gallery space.'
In this new site specific work, Kleem photographically reconstructs institutional fragments 1:1 in massive form. Displaced, familiar and yet utterly foreign, the intervention in the museum space alters the viewer's perception of what is known and recognisable.
