This poster is based on an oil painting with the same title created by Shen Jiawei in 1974. At the time Shen was an amateur artist and a labourer working at a large state-owned farm in Manchuria, China near the Russian (then Soviet Union) border. The painting was selected for the 1974 National Art Exhibition in Beijing. Before the exhibition opening, faces of the two soldiers standing on the platform in the painting were modified by an official artist under the curator’s order without Shen’s permission. Jiang Qing, Chairman Mao Zedong’s wife, highly commended this work; as a result, it was reproduced in a poster format – over half a million copies were distributed across China.

In 1997 Shen returned the faces of the soldiers to their original form. The painting is now in the collection of the Long Museum in Shanghai.
